November Show!

I will be having my own single show for November! On November 7th, (First Friday) I will be showing at Masterplan Design on 44 West King Street in Lancaster, PA! There will be a variety of new works along with some that have never been shown in public yet! My work will be up for the entire month. Well its been such a long time since i posted a blog on my current works. Sorry there are not any updated artworks on the website itself but i will give you a good summary of the pieces i have finished lately since my last posting...last year...so that just means i have more to catch up on....so here goes...

Repeating History

In the last blog I introduced this painting at its first stages. The picture above is what it looks like as an end result. The inspiration for this is the whole idea of the industrialization taking over even the most remote areas of the world. I took a lot of thought into putting a title with this piece, one that would mean something and express exactly how I feel. "Repeating History" is now the title. It came from the old saying," History repeats itself". The wilderness was a part of history and was here before any industries came into the scene so i chose "Repeating History" almost to mock the saying because the wilderness that we destroyed will never be in the complete form it once was in.

here are a few of the recent artworks that are in the works...

this preliminary sketch was made to show the relationship between a predator and prey, no matter how small the predator may be. These bluegills are feeding on a group of minnows. This drawing is from inspirations from the last blog.

here is the most recent state this painting is in. This after the first layer of paint.

here is another work in progress. the main personal goal for this painting is to change the typical viewpoint of a deer like many artists portray, always a straight on view. I am considering making this piece into a nighttime scene with an empty treestand on the left behind the tree.

this is another work in progress. This is a nighttime canadian landscape. I am currently on the second layer of this painting. I have a fascination with canadian landscapes because of their pure quality unlike many of the depleted woodlands that are closer to home. I chose the bright white moonlight to symbolize the purity. I also have a personal connection with canada as well being that i have traveled there to go fishing every summer since i was twelve years old.

Some of the newest pieces of art i will be working on will be set up as a series. Here are the sketches i have been working on through a few weeks of processing.

This sequence starts as a mass of minnows grouped together although this is just a sketch, the fish will be placed differently on the page so the eye will move through the painting more fluidly.

Next the fish are being interupted by an intruder. A bass approaches through the background, but only in the distance.

Soon the bass gets close enough to feed on the fish, followed by another fish. The fish are not yet feeding aggressively. The minnows are beginning to diminish.

This sketch illustrates a bass very aggressively preying on the much smaller group of minnows.

with only two minnows left the bass turns and approaches them quickly. Meanwhile a pike sets in the background as he watches the minnows desperately swim from this bass.

In the final sketch, i try to take the viewer away from the expected outcome and more towards an ironic ending. Rather than the two minnows getting eaten, the predator becomes the prey. This is a good example of the way nature works. This final sketch is upgoing some changes very soon. The pike's full body will be stretched out across sixty inches of canvas. While all the other paintings will be twenty-four inches high by thirty wide. The final painting will be twenty-four inches high as well.

The past few years have been a awakening to me that i cannot become a " typical" wildlife artist like many people fall into. Much of the "wildlife artists" that have come around in the last fifty years have the exact same quality (whether they feel it or not). I realize that i do not want to become just another wildlife artist with talent but a bland creative mind.

Hunt scenes have been recreated for centuries repeatedly. Much of those are also very dull and characterless. I have been told that i need to push myself towards that sort of direction but i feel completely uneasy about the whole idea. Much of the old hunt scenes show many hunters with blank faces, some dead game, and a pack of dogs. I feel that hunt scenes should have a charactor to it. Hunters are faced with awkard unthinkable circumstances many times while on the hunt. I feel like it is my duty as a hunter myself to bring the liveliness of the hunt. I have found that most people that do not experience this do not understand it so it is my responsibility to put it to life.

the goal i have set for myself is to take typical outdoor activities and change it around, whether it be through perspective or unlikely twists. i feel that an art piece is truly successful by the amount of time the viewer observes. if it makes the people think then my goal has been met.
